A Signal to Noise Novel
“That's not noise, man.”
The bus was always on time. Sarge just wishes, now, that he had been wrong about where it was going.
Nineteen years ago his best friend walked into a locked room and was taken through a door in the sky, and Sarge, the most literal mind in the universe, has spent every evening since building the machine that will knock on it from this side. The search is a map drawn in the negative space of an alien archive, one query at a time, into a box that does not love him back. The math is bad. He does not care. He does not get bored of the boring part.
Then the schedule comes due. The apocalypse Chris read in the static arrives exactly on time, the planet becomes content, and the one man who saw it coming is now just one of billions, and the only one hunting someone the great machine filed and forgot.
So he goes topside, into a resistance that pulls the archived back from the dark, and discovers the worst joke of his life: nineteen years of learning to retrieve one impossible man have made him exactly the person the end of the world needed.
He knows where his friend is now. That is the good news.
The bad news is that the door everyone is fighting over is not the door his friend is behind.
That’s not noise, man. It never was. Book Two of Signal to Noise, in the world of The Broadcast.
