A Signal to Noise Novel
“That's not noise, man.”
The door opened for everyone. That was the whole miracle, and Sarge watched it from the back of the room of the entire species, reading a planet-wide manifest for the one name that never scrolled.
His best friend is not dead. Sarge has known that for nineteen years, against a planet that called it noise. Chris is kept, intact, holding a seam in the dark, in an orphaned cancelled channel the great door was never built to reach, a sealed format that only opens from the inside.
So the holder is going to go find. He is going to walk in the front, as a contestant, into a puzzle the dead company built to break exactly his kind of mind, and out-system it the way his friend once broke a show by refusing it. And in the cold at the bottom of it, he is finally going to meet the thing that has been reaching back across the dark for nineteen years, and learn what it kept, and why.
It will cost him the machine he spent nineteen years building, and the mission that organized his entire self. He has done the arithmetic. The arithmetic is bad. He does not care, because the only thing worse than bad math is a friend in the dark and no one willing to do the bad math for him.
He is going to bring Chris home, to a wife who is already there and children who are grown, and then, for the first time since a man walked into a locked room, he is going to have to find out who he is with the load finally set down.
The finale of Signal to Noise. The holder goes to find. Say the names.
That’s not noise, man. It never was. Book Three of Signal to Noise, in the world of The Broadcast.
